Phase II Brings Increased Call Load

As California cities implement Phase II wireless E911 service, they’re able to pinpoint the location of callers–lots of them. Local agencies have discovered that as they move to Phase II, and wireless 911 calls now come to them instead of the California Highway Patrol, their call volume has increased dramatically. For example, Riverside dispatchers reported a 48% increase in 911 call volume during 2007, when compared to the previous year. Interestingly, the city’s other call volume also increased during 2007, up 38%. John Wright, acting comm center manager, said the 2007 increase was incremental each month, and that the number of inappropriate calls is very low. Read more about the uptick here.
