After-Action Report Includes Communications

The Prince Williiam County (Virg.) Department of Fire and Rescue suffered its first line-of-duty death last April with the death of Kyle Wilson at a house fire. The department has now issued a lengthy 382-page investigative report on the incident, examining every aspect of the incident for ways to improve operations. Among the topics discussed is communications, and the investigative team found several issues. Units continued to transmit routine traffic after the mayday was called, personnel reported receiving “boink” signals from their trunked radios when they tried to transmit, and unit designations were not standardized, the report found. Download the report, results from a test of their Motorola radio system, and watch a video that includes radio transmissions during the fire incident here.
