Cellular phones have all but eliminated the need for pay telephones and callboxes, but the city of Chattanooga (Tenn.) says that 10 emergency callboxes along its scenic River Walk walking trail are still effective in providing aid to citizens. The callboxes are linked by radio to the Hamilton County 911 center, and sends the box’s GPS-based latitude and longitude when a call is made. Officials say they don’t keep track of how many prank and false calls the boxes generate, but admit it’s considerable. Read more about the system here.
