The installation of an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system at the Pinellas County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office has revealed a new capability: citizens can request records from the system under the state’s public records law to determine how fast a deputy or officer was traveling at any time of their shift. An article in the Suncoast News said a caller asked about the capability, and that the sheriff’s office didn’t realize it could retrieve such information. Hillsborough County and the city of Clearwater have similar AVL systems, raising issues of deputies’ privacy, records retention periods and citizen access. Read more about the situation here.
