Capt. Takes Blame for Silent Siren

A Walworth County (Wisc.) Sheriff’s captain has taken the blame for warning sirens that were silent in the minutes before a freak tornado struck the area last week, destroying about 16 homes and injuring 13 people. Capt. Jay Maritz explained that he instructed a dispatcher to sound the sirens by pressing a button on the console, but failed to have the dispatcher press a second button that would have actually activated sirens around the county. Some of the sirens were sounded by local township fire departments, however. “This one was strictly my issue,” he told a newspaper. “We’ve taken steps now so it won’t be an issue in the future.” Oddly, the article said all the dispatchers will be retrained, but didn’t mention if Capt. Maritz would receive instruction.
