Regional Radio OKs Upgrade

The city of Victoria (BC, Canada) has voted to maintain membership in the Capital Region Emergency Service Telecommunications Inc. (CREST) regional public safety radio network, just after the system’s administrator’s approved spending $10.4 million on upgrades to improve reception. The city has been very critical of the system’s performance, saying police officers and firefighters frequently encountered bad reception during critical incidents, especially inside buildings, underground and at many downtown locations. It operates in mixed analog/digital mode on 142 MHz frequencies using trunked technology. The upgrades include a new transmitter site, several receivers and in-vehicle repeaters.
