The national public safety radio network recently approve by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) might best be served by new software-defined radio (SDR) technology, according to a 23-page report issued by a group of SDR supporters. The technology–as yet undeployed–allows a radio handset to make intelligent spectrum, frequency, power and other choices virtually at the moment of transmission, improving the radio link and conserving use of the airwaves. The SDR Forum said it believes that SDR and other advanced technologies, “are vital components of a system design to deliver the robustness, flexibility and efficiencies necessary to meet the FCC’s expectations and the communications needs of a wide range of users.” Download (pdf) a copy of the report here.
