A Salinas (Calif.) family was the victim of a spoofed 911 call that said three men with AK-47 rifles were trying to break into their apartment, resulting in the response of heavily-armed officers to the scene. An unknown person used a VoIP telephone line to falsify his ANI/ALI information, and then dialed 911 to tell a Monterey County dispatcher about the armed men. The caller claimed to be a 15 year-old boy, and that he had hidden in a closet. Officers surrounded the apartment and were able to call out the occupants. Shortly after, police learned of the hoax. Police learned that a 15 year-old did live in the apartment, and had been Internet chatting with someone who said he lived in Chicago. Police believe that person made the phony 911 call, and then made three subsequent calls, two to 911 and one to a pizza parlor.
