The British telecom regulation authority has ordered VoIP providers to provide their subscribers full access to the country’s 999 emergency number by Sept. 2008. The Office of Communications (Ofcom) said a survey of VoIP users revealed that 78% of those without 999 access believed they could reach an emergency operator by dialing the 3-digit number. “Ofcom has decided to take action to protect consumers in this critical area amid increasing use of VoIP services and a trend for these services to look and feel more like traditional fixed and mobile phone services,” Ofcom wrote.
