Dispatchers Sue Over Sick Leave Policy

A group of current and former Columbus (Ohio) police dispatchers has filed a federal lawsuit against the city and several comm center supervisors, alleging violations of the Family & Medical Leave Act. The dispatchers claim that, upon returning to work after a leave under the Act, they were required to provide their supervisors with a document signed by a doctor describing the medical condition that prompted the leave. However, the dispatchers claim, federal law requires such medical information to be confidential. Police supervisors refused to allow them to return to work without the document, the lawsuit says, charging them with unexcused absences, suspending or terminating them.
