Honolulu (Hi.) police dispatcher Sally Crowder has filed a lawsuit in state court against the city, co-worker Flossie Leong and an unnamed supervisor, claiming she suffered an eye injury during a “game” that dispatchers played on-duty. According to Crowder’s lawsuit, it was common practice for dispatchers to throw a small ball at one another while working, striking each other on the back with enough force to be painful. However, Crowder said she was struck in the back of the head and in both eyes, detaching her retina and requiring surgery. At least one dispatcher asked a supervisor to stop the practice, but he supervisor declined saying it was “therapeutic,” according to the lawsuit. Crowder filed a worker’s compensation claim that was later denied.
