A New Jersey appeals court has ruled that a lawsuit against the city, Seton Hall University and other parties can go to trial, alleging mistakes by two city dispatchers that ended with the death of an abducted woman in 2000. The suspect later killed himself. The family of Sohayla Massachi alleges in the lawsuit that city dispatchers Debony Venable and George Mike were negligent in handling 911 calls and dispatching officers to the report of Massachi struggling with an ex-boyfriend. A lower court held in 2005 that state law provided the city with immunity from any lawsuits, and the family appealed. The case will now be scheduled for a trial. Both dispatchers are still employed by the city. Download (pdf) the appeals court’s decision and read the details here.
