A Seminole County (Fla.) sheriff’s deputy has been found negligent in handling a 911 hang-up call incident where a woman was later found dead. Dep. Michelle Ashby will not face firing, sheriff Don Eslinger said, but will be disciplined. Ashby responded to the woman’s home, cancelled a back-up unit, noticed an open door covered by a locked screen door, but left after 3 minutes believing no one was home. No dispatchers were implicated in the investigation, but Ashby’s IA interview and a news story provide some insights into 911 hang-up call handling policies–which the sheriff’s office apparently doesn’t have.
