Firefighters’ Union vs. Civilianization

The Beaumont (Tex.) firefighters’ union has objected to a city plan to civilianize the department’s comm center, saying it violates the state’s government code. The city had planned to open a new combined police-fire comm center next May, moving the 10 firefighters who work there now to other assignments. The new $3.3 million center will be inside the municipal court building. The city and International Association of Firefighters Beaumont Union No. 399 has been in arbitration on the issue, but officials say they’ve have made no progress. Richard Smith, hired as as operations manager for the future center, says that both the police and fire departments will retain some gear as back-up for the new center.
