It was literally one thing after another, ending with a fire in the Saratoga Springs (NY) city hall basement, which sent smoke into the police department comm center. Lightning struck a major power line near a substation almost two weeks ago. Power officials said that likely caused a power outage that affected 4,000 subscribers, including city hall. The outage caused the city hall generator to kick in. But someone had placed a cardboard box next to the generator, against the muffler pipe. After the pipe became hot, the box ignited, filling the nearby comm center with smoke. Asst. police chief Christopher Cole praised the dispatchers. “They did an outstanding job maintaining their composure during this incident–all while the police department and dispatch center continued to fill with smoke.” No one was injured, the phones kept working and the police department used portable radios and cellular phones to keep in touch.
