Asst. San Diego (Calif.) police chief William Maheu watched his son use his laptop to talk to other on-line game players, and wondered why police officers couldn’t use their cellular phone to listen to the police radio? That incident was documented in a San Diego Tribute newspaper story about Maheu’s work to improve operations at the department through technology. The department has 400 PDAs which officers use for accessing various law enforcement databases, and within six months they’ll also be capable of receiving live video from police and fire department helicopters.
