The Bees Made Me Do It

Construction workers are frequently cutting through communications cables with backhoes and other equipment. But this time the worker has an excuse–really. Hays County (Tex.) officials say workers in the town of Kyle were drilling holes yesterday associated with a new store. A worker using an auger was carefully lowering the device when–buzzzzzz. A swarm of bees began stinging him, so he lept from the machine, hitting a hydraulic lever on the way. The auger continued drilling into the ground, striking a fiber optic cable, and knocking out 911 for a substantial part of the county. The cable cut affected parts of Austin and San Antonio, including long-distance calls in those cities.
