Logging Tapes Create Extra Work

Officials at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department have been working hard on an investigation into the murder of two officers last March, but also working to comply with various court orders to release logging tapes of 911 calls and radio transmissions made before, during and after the incident. The Charlotte Observer newspaper requested the materials under the Freedom of Information Act, but the police department says that some 911 calls and radio transmissions should be withheld. A Superior Court judge has now ordered the police department to produce copies of any calls or broadcasts they want to withhold, and he will review them. The radio materials alone cover 36 hours.
