There are lots of groups competing for wireless spectrum, and many of them are following Morgan O’Brien’s method of making their proposals more palatable for FCC approval–offer a public safety connection. Last year M2Z Networks submitted a proposal to the FCC for spectrum in the 2.1 GHz band, positioning it under the banner of “Freedom. Innovation,” and oddly tying in a concern among “families…concerned about the growing threat to children of easily accessible indecent and pornographic material.” The company is headed by its co-founder, former FCC wireless chief John Muleta. Now the group claims support from APCO and two other public safety organizations, based a letter the groups wrote the FCC. Check out the group’s Web site, which looks less like a business and more like a grass-roots organization. And then download (pdf) the letter that APCO, IAFC and IACP wrote to the FCC, and see if it really constitutes “support.” [on Sept. 4th the FCC denied the M2Z proposal, as documented here.]
