911 Outage, Alarm Wasn’t Audible

Hawkins County (Tenn.) 911 dispatchers didn’t hear an alarm that sounded when there was a power glitch and the system switched over to battery power. The air conditioning had not been working, and fans the dispatchers brought in drowned out the sound of the alarm. Some time later the batteries overheated and shorted out, knocking out the 911 system and generating a burning odor. Dispatchers called the fire department and arranged to have Kingsport Central Dispatch take over 911 call handling, a process that took about 3 minutes. Power was restored after about 30 minutes–but the air conditioning still isn’t working. The solution for the alarm–a strobe light has been installed.
