Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine announced the will establish three strategic radio caches in the Chesapeake, Fairfax County and Harrisonburg regions to improve communications for disasters or other large-scale emergencies. The project is funded by $5 million in federal homeland security grants, and will be awarded to the involved counties, which applied to create the caches of 300 to 500 radios programmed on various frequencies in various bands. The state has a Interoperability Coordinator and a formal program for improving public safety communications, described in more detail here.
