Tucson Electric Power Co. learned through a local Motorola dealer that the Oro Valley Police Department had just two radio channels, and was stalled in obtaining a new channel because regional frequencies were all licensed. So the company donated a 460 MHz channel they had been using for data and pager transmissions, allowing the police department to upgrade its capabilities for just $5,000. Police say they host several special events during the year that max out their two channels, and having a third channel eases communications during these periods. TEP is shairng its transmitter site, along with a power connection and rack space. The company moved to 800 MHz and had the frequencies and gear left-over, officials said.
