700 MHz Mania

Just two days after the FCC established new spectrum auction rules intended to create a public-private, nationwide public safety radio system, companies are jumping on board hoping to grab some of the potential revenues. Earlier, nine public safety organizations formed a trust, hoping to be appointed by the FCC to oversee the public portion of the radio network. That Public Safety Spectrum Trust (PSST) group has, in turn, solicited a company to serve as its agent and advisor. According to PSST, they received applications from 10 companies seeking the contract–without an assurance that the FCC will even pick PSST as the trustee. PSST says they’re evaluating the proposals and will chose a winner the week of August 20th.
