UK police officers in Devon and Cornwall will be the first trained in a new standardized radio communications language, intended to make information clearer and more concise. The new AirWaveSpeak protocol uses just 28 standard phrases and 16 status codes to convey the most common information on the national, TETRA-based law enforcement radio system. [If you know of a link to the standards, e-mail me!] Other counties in the UK could be using the system by next summer. Some of the phrases include “Yes, Yes” instead of “Yes,” using “Negative” instead of “No,” the word “Out” instead of “Bye,” and “Thank you” instead of “Cheers, mate.”
