Response Delay Investigated

Two California Highway Patrol dispatchers from the Truckee Dispatch Center have been transferred to other assignments during an investigation of their handling of several 911 calls reporting a wildfire last month. Citizens complained that their initial calls reporting the fire were not transferred to the fire department, but rather the two dispatchers told callers the flames were part of a controlled burn. A preliminary investigation found that a fire response to the fire was delayed by at least 9 minutes. The fire consumed 254 homes and 85 businesses and took almost two weeks to control. CHP Capt. Gary Ross of the Truckee station said one dispatcher is a 27-year veteran and the other for 17-year employee. “They’re taking it pretty hard,” Ross told a reporter.
