Life Rings Linked to 911

Vicki Cech’s 17 year-old son drowned at the beach of Grand Haven (Mich.) State Park in 2003, and she’s been trying to get officials to improve safety there ever since. She convinced officials to install life rings every 100 feet along the pier, and they’ve been effective at saving at least one swimmer. Now the city will install alarms on each of the 15 mounts for the life rings, arranged to automatically dial 911 if someone lifts up a ring, and also to activate a video camera to show the dispatcher what is happening at the beach. Officials say the system cost about $100,000, and that emergency responses should be more rapid. A side benefit will be that life ring theft will be deterred.
