NENA has sadly announced the death of former association president Bill McMurray, who worked as communications center manager for Marin County (N. Calif.). McMurray, 51, died suddenly of cardiac arrest on Monday morning, leaving his wife Sherrald and daughters, Meredith, Jerri, and Amanda. In a statement, NENA president Jason Barbour said McMurray’s passing was “a shock to us all,” and it was “truly a sad day for the entire NENA family and all those who knew Bill.” McMurray was a 30-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, starting as a dispatcher and moving to manager in 1986. He served as NENA president in 2004-2005, but was involved in many association projects before and after his term, most recently the Next-Generation 911 project. “Bill cared deeply for the people who worked with him and for the public safety mission they are called upon to carry out each and every day,” Barbour said. “He was profoundly committed to the public safety dispatching profession and to the agencies and citizens of the county, and country, that he served.” [service info]
