The York County (Penn.) 911 center is experiencing a period of low staffing, something which comes and goes for the agency, officials say. Back in 2004 they had 20 vacancies out of 66 authorized positions at the 911 center. By last year all their positions were filled…until last November. Then some unexpected resignations occurred, and staffing has now left them with 11 empty positions, or about a 16% vacancy rate. Supervisors and dispatchers must work about 8 to 12 hours of overtime to fill the empty shifts, sometimes mandatory overtime. Worse yet, the center recently hired 10 new dispatchers, and training was to start this week. However, only 6 of those persons showed up. Read more here.
