Trouble For Over-Payments

According to Barry County (Mich.) 911 director Charles Nystrom, his employee deserved more pay. So, according to county officials, he has been padding dispatcher paychecks up to one hour each week going back to 2000, costing the county thousands of dollars. A county audit discovered that Nystrom was adding 10 hours to dispatchers’ paychecks in some 2-week pay periods. He added an hour of pay each week for supervisors, the county said, all adding up to perhaps $40,000 extra. Sheriff Dar Leaf told a reporter, “He said his employees come in to work 15 minutes early every day and he owed that to them. Plus, for supervisors, was to cover the cost of what they had to put into retirement.” Nystrom has not been charged criminally, and remains at work. The sheriff, county prosecutor and 911 board are pondering how to handle the situation.
