During its public meeting today, the FCC voted to implement several of the recommendations made by its Hurricane Katrina panel, including for public safety agencies, TV and radio broadcasters and telephone providers. The FCC ordered its Public Safety Homeland Security Bureau to develop and implement an awareness program to educate public safety agencies about alternative communications technologies, and “promote the implementation of various best practices to ensure a more robust E911 service.” Other provisions include publicizing the Emergency Alert System (EAS), working with the emergency medical community to improve communications systems, and streamlining telephone network outage reporting.
