Officials in Louisville (Ken.) have tallied up the cost of a new public safety communications system and come up with a huge figure: $71 million. The MetroSafe project will include a $22.5 million radio system installed by Motorola, along with mobile data system covering up to 5,000 vehicles, new radio towers, and other gear. The original cost was estimated to be $50 million, and the latter stages of bidding put the cost at over $100 million. Now city officials are stuck between the two extremes, unhappy at the high cost, but glad it wasn’t as much as the high bids.
