A long article in the The Courier-Journal newspaper reveals that the city received just one, $59 million bid for the third phase of its MetroSafe public safety communications project because the specifications were so limited. Apparently city officials had been warned by M/A-COMM execs of the specs and that it would limit the city to a single bidder, allowing Motorola to basically set the system’s final price. Motorola’s bid turned out to be twice what the city had estimated the system would cost. Read more about the project and bidding here.
