Dispatchers Return to Center

Latah County (Idaho) dispatchers returned to work Wednesday at the downtown courthouse, the scene of a deadly shooting last weekend that took the life of two persons and the suspect. Dispatcher Chantelle Nieuwmsa was on-duty during the night shift when the shooting occurred. She told a reporter, “I was sure the guy was going to break into the department and try to mow us down with his gun.” Police say the suspect had a fully-auto assault rifle and another semi-auto rifle. “It was like bam, bam, bam and then dead silence,” said Nieuwsma. “I had bullets whizzing in front of me and wood hitting me and metal shrapnel and if I’d kept going of course I would have been killed.” She and other courthouse employees are wearing ribbons in honor of Moscow police Lt. Lee Newbill, one of the shooting victims.
