Comm Center Burn-Out

Woodbury Count (Iowa) dispatcher Louise Keleher was on-duty back in 1989 when an airliner crashed at the Sioux City airport, killing 112 passengers. Since then she’s handled thousands of phone calls, many of them stressful. An article in the on-line Sioux City Journal recounts Keleher’s career, and notes that staffing shortages are common at America’s public safety comm centers, caused by high turn-over and low hiring rates.
