City, County Court Fight

The city of Joplin (Mo.) and Jasper County have debated how 911 calls should be handled within the city, and have now moved to the next stage–a court battle to prevent the county from taking over 911 call handling.
The city has applied for a temporary restraining order to prevent the county from making any moves, and a court hearing has been scheduled for May 14th. The city claims the change would add 45 seconds to the 911 call handling process, potentially putting city residents in danger. The county says the delay is overstated, and that they would be able to handle more simultaneous 911 calls. The county claims they are on solid legal grounds for assuming 911 call handling, based on state statutes. Read more about the situation here.
