The tornado that struck Greensburg (Kan.) last Friday night tested a new 19-county back-up and training comm center that opened just two weeks ago. The center is located in Hutchinson, about 85 miles from Greensburg, and its six consoles were quickly staffed by dispatchers from three surrounding counties who handled incoming 911 calls from Kiowa County where the tornado struck. Interestingly, Kiowa County was not a member of the back-up center, but it was linked up after the tornado struck using 7-digit lines, and then quickly-arranged direct lines. Read more here.
