Verizon Communications Inc. announced its latest quarterly financial figures, along with numbers that confirm that more American’s are moving from wired to wireless telephones. The changes have implications for jurisdictions that have 911 surcharges on wired and wireless phones. Verizon, which serves 28 states and the District of Columbia, reported that its wired customers decreased 7.9% over the past year, to 44.2 million. On the cellular side, Verizon and its partner Vodafone Group saw a 3% increase in customers, to 60.7 million. By the way, Verizon’s Internet customers increased 30% over the past year, presumably some of whom are using the connection for VoIP communications.
