A tech start-up company has proposed that cellular phone handsets be modified with their software to allow short-range control of subscribers’ phones and to send alert messages to the phones. Sssh Technology would licenese their software for the operating systems of handsets, and then low-power transmitters could send emergency alerts and other messages, as well as control commands (silence the phone, etc.) directly to handsets. The company said one application would be to allow law enforcement officers to send messages directly from their patrol car to nearby cellular phones to warn them of an emergency.
