Just three days after the murders at Virginia Tech University, the Florida university system’s Board of Governor’s requested $1.5 million from the legislature to install warning systems on campuses across the state. After a special meeting on April 19th, the board issued a statement asking for the money to, “develop or complete the development of an emergency alert system and related training that will provide immediate notification to students and staff through reverse 911, instance messaging, e-mail, loudspeaker siren and or any other device appropriate to each campus.” The board also asked the legislation for an additional $2 million a year to increase staffing of campus police departments.
