Sales Tax Funding Proposal

An article in the The Columbian newspaper says that support from individual cities is building for a 0.1% increase to the Clark County (Wash.) sales tax to generate $30 million to improve the public safety radio system. Without the increase, the cities would have to come up with varying amounts of money for annual operation, depending upon their population, ranging up to $1.2 million a year. If approved, the project would replace a 10 year-old 800 MHz trunked radio system installed by Motorola. It now operates in analog mode, but the news story says it will be “obsolete” within 6 years, “as part of the nationwide conversion from analog to digital technology.” Read the story here.
