Staffing Shortage Is Severe

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom introduced the city’s new 311 non-emergency calling number to the public, noting that he hoped it would take the presssure off the city’s understaffed police comm center where 911 calls are answered. According to officials, the center is authorized 187 positions, but that just 155 employees are on-staff now. And of those, just 111 are actually working because of long-term disabilities, or a vacancy rate of 40.6%. An APCO spokesman told the Examiner newspaper that the nationwide turn-over rate for comm centers is 17%. San Francisco pays police dispatchers $54,314 to $66,014 a year.
