Old Saybrook (Conn.) police Lt. Clifford Barrows and dispatcher Shannon Murphy were freezing inside the department’s comm center last Jan. 26th. When Barrows went to plug in a second space heater, Murphy pointed out the electrical outlet to use. But there was already a cord plugged in, so Barrows yanked it out, and then plugged in the heater. What he didn’t see was a sign next to the outlet warning, “911 Equip. ONLY!! DO NOT USE!!!” The 911 system was down for 22 minutes, and re-routing calls was delayed. The police chief accused Barrows of lying about the incident, proposed to fire him, but Barrows retired instead. Read more about the incident here.
