The federal General Accounting Office (GAO) has issued a study on the Emergency Alerting System (EAS), concluding that it has significant limitations and that developing a new, integrated system “will be challenging.” Talking to stakeholders that include the nation’s media, cable and satellite operators, the GAO said the existing system, “faces a range of technical, cultural, and other challenges, such as interfacing with newer communications technologies and issuing alerts in multiple languages.” Download (pdf) the agency’s report here.
