A couple of auto theft suspects being chased by Midvale (Utah) police came up with a rather unique solution: the female passenger dialed 911 and reported a shooting at a location on the other side of town. The dispatcher took the information and broadcast it, and officers then ended the pursuit to respond to what they thought was a shooting with an injured victim. The chase had reached 80 mph through residential areas and parking lots, and–unbelieveably–the passenger also tossed out a 60-pound safe along the way, presumably to discourage officers from following. Police did not immediately release the tape of the 911 call, so it’s unclear if there were any sounds of sirens in the background.
