Kanawha County (WV) commission president Kent Carper has sent a letter to the 911 Council asking them to support a pay increase for public safety dispatchers, as much as $3,000 a year. Carper has been proposing improved pay for the past several years, hoping to improve retention after the dispatchers reach the top pay step. Under the plan, it would take five years to reach top step, which would be about $32,000 a year. Carper also hopes to take the pay issue state-wide, saying the skills and stress of the job require top pay.
