Radio Network Overwhelmed

Emergency workers in Enterprise (Ala.) ran into radio problems while handling the March 1st tornado that killed eight high school students. The county used radios operating on the Southern LINC system, which is operated by a regional power utility. The Southern LINC system is also used by businesses and consumers as a cellular-like system, and became jammed just minutes after the tornado hit. Read more about the situation here. Update: Enterprise city officials later said their fire and rescue channels stopped working, but those agencies switched to the police channel, which continued to work during the emergency at the high school. City officials said the high level of traffic on the police channel didn’t hinder emergency operations.
