The Manteca (Calif.) police department will take its money any way it comes. The city council just appropriated $1.2 million to the department to buy new UHF radios that will work on a future 450 MHz trunked system used by all San Joaquin County agencies. And the money came from fees paid by housing developers to guarantee sewer allocations. The department must switch out radios used by patrol, Explorers, animal control officers, reserve and community service officers, and other employees. They also need to build four new base stations and have a supply of extra radios. The city is located in the inland valley of east of San Francisco, and developers are actively building there, generating the sewer fees.
