The U.S. Senate’s Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has approved the “911 Modernization Act” (S. 93) bill introduced by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alas.) to appropriate money promised in legislation passed in 2005. The bill is supported by both NENA and APCO, and represents the first potential success so far in appropriating up to $250 million authorized in the ENHANCE 911 Act of 2005. However, this bill only offers $43.5 million of the total authorized. The House is considering a companion bill, and if passed a joint House-Senate committee must approve the legislation, and then the president must sign the bill. Download (pdf) the 1-page bill here.
