Telephone Lawsuit Filed-Updated

Three Clinton County (Iowa) dispatchers have filed a federal lawsuit claiming that the county sheriff, Clinton police chief and a communications supervisor eavesdropped on their private telephone conversations, recorded them and then disciplined them for remarks they made during calls. Carolyn Phelps, Donna Goddard and Betty Stenerson filed the lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Davenport. Two of the dispatchers still work at the center, and say the recording occurred last year on a phone line set aside to receive and make personal calls. They seek punitive damages, court costs and attorney’s fees, and also asked for a permanent injunctions prohibiting future recording of personal calls. Download (pdf) a copy of the lawsuit here.
