The ambulance company under contract to Monterey County (Calif.) has asked the county to extend the response time requirements in certain parts of the county from the current 8-minute standard to 12 minutes. The company said the company has had to staff additional ambulances to meet the 8-minute standard, and that has contributed to a $2.2 million revenue deficit for the region during 2002. The county has assigned a task force to investigate the situation. West-Med said it needed up to three ambulances to meet the response time goal, but only handles one or two incidents in the area per day. West-Med faces $25,000 monthly fines if they don’t meet their response time goals. Read more here.
